Minnesota United is an accessible, resilient and unifying force bringing the fastest growing sport in the country to fans in Minnesota and across the Twin Cities with innovative style. Building a new home in the heart of two industrious cities, the North is rising—not replicating, but ushering in a new era of soccer in America.
Club History
Professional soccer emerged at the forefront of Minnesota sports in 1976 when the Kicks first began play at the old Met. That legacy has continued for 40 years. Trophies, underdog drama and individual success converge to form the essence of Minnesota soccer. With the Loons filling NSC Stadium to capacity nearly every weekend from April through November, the next chapter of professional soccer in Minnesota has begun.
The Crest
Star – The six pointed star signifies the Star of the North.
Loon – Minnesota State Bird.
Badge – Grey color to represent the Iron Range in Northern Minnesota.
Stripe – The Mississippi River, which unites the crest as the blue angled stripe. The two sides of the crest represent the two Twin Cities, Minneapolis and St. Paul.
Minnesota United – The “Loons” unite the proud history of Minnesota soccer under one banner—connecting Minnesota’s two largest cities and embracing multicultural support of the beautiful game.
MLS Expansion
It has been nearly 40 years since Minnesota had a top division soccer team. That all changes when Minnesota United kicks off with Major League Soccer. Already drawing sellout crowds to Blaine, the raucous support of United will echo high through the St. Paul skyline as the Loons fluster opponents on the pitch and assert North American dominance in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
Minnesota United was awarded an expansion spot in Major League Soccer on March 25, 2015 and shortly thereafter announced its intention to build a state of the art soccer stadium in St. Paul at the center of downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul. Construction of that stadium is expected to begin in summer of 2016 with United joining MLS in 2017 or 2018.
